Head Start Staff Learn to Test Children’s Vision

Shelby County Head Start Staff Listen as Jeane Ostenfeld
conducts a vision screening training program in Memphis.

Shelby County Government and YMCA Head Start staff learned to test children’s vision and identify signs of potential eye health problems during PBT’s certified vision screening training program last fall. More than 3,000 children in Shelby County Head Start programs may benefit from vision screenings. “We are excited to work with the Shelby County Government Head Start office and Prevent Blindness Tennessee to provide our staff with the skills and knowledge needed to identify children’s vision problems,” said Dr. Forestene L. London, Executive Director, YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South Head Start Program. “This enables us to track the vision needs of Head Start children throughout the program year.” An estimated one child in 20 preschool children has an eye problem. Studies indicate that unresolved vision deficits could impair the ability to respond fully to educational instruction. “A screening does not replace a professional eye examination but it can help identify problems early,” said Mary Worthy, PBT Director of Programs and Community Out Reach. “Early detection and education are keys to preventing unnecessary vision loss.” In 2006-07, Prevent Blindness Tennessee screened 4,856 preschoolers, provided eye examinations to 212 children and eyeglasses for 186 children.

Altered Vision: Artists Look Beyond Sight Loss

Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club raise $33,000 to Save Sight

Linda Ferguson and Michael Lusk handed out eye health and safety information while taking donations at Wal-Mart in Dickson, TN.

Faye Guthrie, Jo Ritterspacher, and Monica Klien provided New York style hot dogs and homemade baked treats to supporters for donations outside of Sam’s Club in Clarksville, TN.

Hundreds of Wal-Mart Vision Center and Sam’s Club Optical employees across Tennessee participated in the 11th annual Campaign to Save Sight 2006 to raise money for Prevent Blindness Tennessee programs and increase awareness about healthy vision. Volunteers held barbeques, bake sales, and other fun activities to collectively raise $33,000. Sixteen stores raised $1,000 or more with the average store gift being $500. “Because of Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club’s support a child will receive her first pair of glasses, a senior will have a complete eye exam and our education programs in schools and the workplace will continue to thrive,” said Jennifer Gamble, PBT Vice President of Marketing and Development. “We appreciate Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club for their volunteerism and commitment over the years to the community.”
