HETHERINGTON SOCIETY

A giving society in the name of Sue Hetherington, longtime supporter of PBI, fulfilling the role of executive director for 18 years and serving on the board as an honorary lifetime member.

Sue Hetherington became executive director of Prevent Blindness Indiana (then Indiana Society for the Prevention of Blindness) in 1996.

In her 18-year term, Sue led the organization out of debt and into a thriving one with a budget of more than $300,000 and supervised a staff ranging between three and seven, resulting in her leadership role of the PBA Executive Directors’ Association.

Of her achievements, she is most proud of setting up a glaucoma screening center within the PBI office, initiating vision screenings of migrant children, establishing a satellite office in Northwest Indiana, undertaking sports eye safety programs, being recognized by PBA for its Wheels for Sight donation promotion, and special events such as The Most Beautiful Eyes in Indiana contest, Cycle for Sight and Eye Ball that helped fund PBI’s sight-saving programs. Sue’s dedication to saving sight over the course of a 25- year period has played an integral role in the state of vision health today in Indiana.

People of Vision is also an important legacy of Sue’s administrative work with the active volunteer board of directors. This auxiliary assists PBI with vision screenings, communications, office work and fundraising.

Sue is currently a lifetime honorary director of PBI, a member of the POV Lifetime Endowment and still provides her expertise on several PBI board committees.
