Adult Vision Screenings

Currently, one million Americans over age 40 are blind and an additional 3.3 million suffer from some vision loss—a number projected to reach 5.5 million by 2020. With the aging baby boomer generation, the number of Americans with an age-related eye disease is expected to double within the next 30 years.

Vision loss costs the U.S. economy more than $68 billion annually. Unless proactive, preventative measures are taken - such as early detection and treatment - reactionary measures will cause that number to skyrocket.

Our vision screenings and follow-up care programs are cost-effective measures that help insure the sight of Hoosiers statewide.

Using guidelines set forth by Prevent Blindness America, PBI uses a combination of the following procedures and tests to conduct adult vision screenings:

  • Registration/Risk Assessment to gather information that will indicate if the subject is suspect or at risk for eye disorders or diseases
  • Near and/or Distance Visual Acuity (clarity)
  • Visual Field Test - t his tests the subject’s peripheral field of vision.  It is required for subjects age 40 and over and for those who, on the registration form under the risk assessment questions, have indicated a family history of glaucoma or eye injuries.
  • Tonometer - optional screening
  • Exit Interviews

Equipment:

Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) - Screens visual fields, which provides early detection of glaucoma and other vision disorders

Optec - Screens for near and far visual acuity

Through PBI's Vision Tracker, all referrals are followed up on by blind or visually-impaired call center representatives at Bosma Enterprises. Any qualifying referrals who are low-income or without vision coverage can contact PBI's Gift of Vision program to seek assistance.
