GIFT OF VISION

Keeping Hoosier Adults In Sight

"Gift of Vision" is the program established by Prevent Blindness Indiana (PBI) that matches economically underprivileged individuals with eye care professionals in their area who donate their time and services to those who need, but cannot afford, eye care.

This program is possible only because of the generosity of our wonderful eye-care professionals, most of whom have been with the program since its inception in 2002.

Doctors in nearly every county statewide - from small towns to major cities - have stepped up to assist PBI in its mission to maintain Sight for Life for all Hoosiers. The need continues to grow, so please do consider enrolling as a Gift of Vision doctor if you aren't currently participating.

Why is the "Gift of Vision" program important?

The number of Americans with age-related eye disease and vision impairment is expected to double within the next 30 years. While school-aged children (those under 18) are covered through our Vision Service Provider (VSP) program, there is no such program for low-income adults. "Gift of Vision" is designed to bridge that gap and is frequently one of the only resources left for Indiana adults in need of professional eye care. While our current base of participating doctors has been sufficient to service our referrals thus far, the number of adults requesting our help is quickly exceeding PBI’s current in-kind doctor network.

Who is eligible for "Gift of Vision" services?

PBI requires "Gift of Vision" clients to meet certain eligibility requirements before they are linked with eye care; these guidelines help determine those in most dire financial need.

What services are donated through the "Gift of Vision" program?

"Gift of Vision" furnishes eye exams and glasses (when possible) to eligible clients, and occasionally even surgical procedures. The doctors’ gifts are tax deductible.

When do "Gift of Vision" eye-care professionals offer their time?

The majority of eye-care professionals in the "Gift of Vision" program participate on an "as needed" basis with a limit on the number of donated services per year.
