VISION SCREENING PROGRAMS
Children's Vision Screening
Eighty percent of learning is visual, yet one in four school-age children and one in 20 preschool-age children has an undiagnosed vision impairment.
Indiana law requires a Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) exam be performed by a licensed eye-care professional at kindergarten or first, third and eighth grades. No funds or resources support these laws, however, so because of limited time, means and manpower, schools can seek a waiver of the MCT exam. Schools that opt out of the MCT requirement can ask PBI to screen—our teams help schools screen their children early and efficiently to make sure they are visually prepared to learn.
Sometimes the issue is with acuity—an impaired ability to see the world around them: books, blackboard, art, playing field and people. Other times the issue is with field of vision or muscle imbalance, which can lead to poor depth perception and, in some cases, permanent loss of vision in the weaker eye.

Vision Screening for Adults
Using guidelines set forth by Prevent Blindness America, PBI uses a combination of the following procedures and tests to conduct adult vision screenings:
- Registration/Risk Assessment to gather information that will indicate if the subject is suspect or at risk for eye disorders or diseases
- Near and/or Distance Visual Acuity (clarity)
- Visual Field Test - t his tests the subject’s peripheral field of vision. It is required for subjects age 40 and over and for those who, on the registration form under the risk assessment questions, have indicated a family history of glaucoma or eye injuries.
- Tonometer - optional screening
Through PBI's Vision Tracker, all referrals are followed up on by blind or visually-impaired call center representatives at Bosma Enterprises. Any qualifying referrals who are low-income or without vision coverage can contact PBI's Sight for Students, Eye See Again, Gift of Vision or Gift of Sight programs to seek assistance.
