ILLINOIS PROGRAM AREA RECEIVES 2009 NEI GRANT

The Illinois Program Area received a 2009 Healthy Community Vision Award from the National Eye Institute to help fund the development of a new program.  The Diabetic Eye Disease Educator Certification Program is a comprehensive eye health education program designed to teach lay outreach personnel and allied health professionals about the visual system and the signs, symptoms and complications of the secondary diseases of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.  It will be designed for delivery through the health outreach programs of faith based organizations, community health centers, health departments and civic organizations to those populations at the highest risk for developing diabetes: African Americans, Hispanics and Latinos.  Prevent Blindness America will provide the training and materials to clinics, organizations and groups that wish to add this program to their services.  Content development will begin in early summer with an estimated roll out date of January 2010.

Illinois Program Area would like to thank the following partners for their help and input with this project: Chicago Family Health, TCA Health and IMAN Clinic.

PBA-IPA AND MFS PARTNER TO HELP PROTECT CHILDREN’S EYES AGAINST UV RAYS

Prevent Blindness America and MFS Eyewear, a leading manufacturer of children’s 100% UV protective eyewear, are partnering to promote UV protection awareness to parents and children’s at the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier.  The program will run from May until August 2009 during Prevent Blindness America’s free monthly children’s vision screening.  Each child who participates will receive a free pair of children’s sunglasses.

The sunglasses are 100% UV protective and designed to fit children and absorb the wear and tear of outdoor activities while shielding their eyes from the sun.  The two organizations are providing these incentives as a step to prompt parents and children to begin practicing proper eye protection while outside.
