Gift of Vision

Last year many eye exams and glasses were donated through Prevent Blindness Indiana’s Gift of Vision Program.

What is Gift of Vision?

Gift of Vision matches eye care professionals around the state with individuals who need, who cannot afford eye care. The eye care professionals who participate in the program donate their time and services to provide comprehensive eye exams to those in need.

Why do we need Gift of Vision?

When money becomes tight for people, health matters tend to become a low priority-especially the eyes. Those in desperate need of care may go untreated, increasing the risk of blindness. Gift of Vision bridges the gap between the cost of eye care and those uninsured with low income, making it possible for those in need to improve or save their sight.

How are clients referred?

Social service organizations refer most Gift of Vision clients. Some simply find us in the phone book. Clients must be low income and uninsured to be eligible. Once a client is approved, an eye care professional is contacted and an appointment set.

When are exams donated?

Most eye care professionals provide eye exams year-round on an as-needed basis. Some will specify a particular date to give services.

What if someone needs more than an eye exam?

Many eye care professionals are able to donate eyewear, but we have other resources available just in case. Most eye care professionals will provide follow-up care for those with more serious diseases or disorders. At times we may be able to find resources for eligible clients for surgery.
