Primary Health Care Preschool Vision Screening Project

Goals of the Primary Health Care Preschool Vision Screening Project:
  • Early detection and treatment of childhood eye and vision disorders.

  • A vision screening beginning at age 3 for all Ohio's children.

  • A vision assessment within the framework of a pediatric health assessment.

  • A complete professional eye exam by an ophthalmologist or optometrist by age 5 for all Ohio's children as appropriate.

At the National level, the Healthy People 2010 plan and the Maternal Children Health Division of Department of Health and Human Services have recently put increased emphasis on the early detection and treatment of childhood eye disorders. Ohio is already poised to participate as a partner in implementing approaches that address children's eye and vision care issues.

The movement to increase public awareness about the importance of adopting a regular regimen of professional eye care from birth through the entire life span has the support of the following organizations: American Academy of Pediatrics-Ohio Chapter, Children's Defense Fund-Ohio, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners-Ohio Chapter, Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, Ohio Association of Children's Hospitals, Ohio Association of School Nurses, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Commission on Minority Health, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Ohio Department of Education, Ohio Education Association, Ohio Head Start Association, Ohio Lions, The Ohio Ophthalmological Society, Ohio Optometric Association, Ohio Osteopathic Association, The Ohio State Medical Association, Opticians Association of Ohio, and Prevent Blindness Ohio.
