PBO Eye Health and Safety Education provides hands-on learning opportunities for children and adults that will enable them to make wise, informed decisions about how to keep their eyes healthy and safe throughout their lifetime. PBO has several educational programs:
• Wise About Eyes exhibit is designed to educate Ohio’s children and their parents and teachers on how to keep their eyes healthy and safe. Six interactive kiosks provide high-tech activities and learning experiences to educate you and your family about how you can keep your eyes healthy and safe for your lifetime. Have you ever wondered what life would be like with a vision disorder or disease? You can try work your way out of a maze with impaired vision, its harder than you think! Have you noticed that your vision has gotten worse as you have gotten older? Come and spin the aging eye wheel to see how normal vision can change. Learn simple things that you can do to prevent eye diseases and eye injury. Try to break the eye safety lenses that are designed to protect your eyes from impact injuries (bet you can’t!). And try to figure out how you really see with your brain, not your eyes!
The Wise About Eyes exhibit will open at the Boonshoft Museum on June 21, 2007 and will be on display through September 23, 2007.
Wise About Eyes is presented by Prevent Blindness Ohio and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in partnership with Ohio Association of School Nurses, Opticians Association of Ohio, Ohio Optometric Association and Ohio Ophthalmological Society and is funded by the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Child and Family Health Services, Save Our Sight Program. Find out more HERE.
• Wild About Eyes is a small kiosk-sized interactive exhibit that also teaches children and adults about eye health and safety. Wild About Eyes has four activity stations: An interactive computer site from the website BrainPop.com that leads children through games and a quiz about vision; vision simulation paddles that let the viewer experience what the world looks like with a particular eye disease or disorder; a bowling ball droops on shatterproof, polycarbonate lenses to demonstrate eye safety wear; and a game to match specific activities with the corresponding eye safety wear. In conjunction with the Wild About Eyes exhibit on display at each library, Prevent Blindness Ohio sponsors a special reading hour for area children and their caretakers. This hour-long event includes appearances by local and state legislators and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, as well as many hands-on activities about eye health and safety for the children and their caretakers to engage in. Wild About Eyes will be on display at 11 libraries across Ohio in 2007-08. Find out more HERE.
