Living With Sight Loss in Tennessee
Introduction
If you have lost your sight, or are losing it, or if a member of your family or a friend has loss of sight, you know the many problems that occur and the need for help.
This online resource is meant to help with some of the problems associated with loss of sight. It should also be useful to professionals for educating and counseling persons with sight loss.
Living with Sight Loss in Tennessee is not intended to provide information on all aspects of sight loss. It is intended more to let you know that you are not alone. There is help available in our state. The list of resources is largely limited to those that provide entry into the community system rather than all the resources in the system.
Despite the good intentions of all persons concerned, inevitably there are times when the system may seem to fail to meet your needs. Perhaps your needs were not met because your goals were unrealistic. You may have been looking for a substitute for sight and may have not been willing to accept the compromises offered. The system may have failed because there were too many agencies involved, and they overwhelmed and confused you. Perhaps the services promised were not delivered. The system may have seemed to fail because you gave up too quickly. Sometimes it is very frustrating to try to find out what is available and who can help. It often takes numerous phone calls and numerous contacts to locate what you are looking for.
Do not give up! Services are available, and every effort should be expended to ensure their use. Persistence, patience, realistic expectations, and sometimes a gentle yell will pay dividends.
