Free screenings are conducted at health fairs, senior citizen centers, businesses, hospitals and community settings. Acuity and field screenings are conducted using the latest in screening equipment. Failure of one or both of these tests may indicate a possible vision problem in the participant. If this happens, referral for eye examination is necessary. Early detection of possible vision problems may help prevent unnecessary vision loss.

Texas statute requires that children from the ages of 4 through 18 receive vision and hearing screenings. We screen for acuity using the Snellen "E" chart or the HOTV. Though not required by statute, we also photoscreen preverbal, nonverbal and special needs children with the use of the MTI Photoscreener.

Partners in Prevention is a free eye exam referral program which was initiated in 1989. With this program, various eye care professionals donate free eye exams every month. When a vision problem is detected, the individual is referred to one of the eye care professionals who have signed up for the "Partners" program. The client is diagnosed by the eye care professional and if it is determined that he/she needs vision correction, an eyeglass prescription is prepared and eyeglasses distributed through the eyeglass dispensary.
While our organization offers free vision screenings for students, those children who are screened by a nurse or other certified person and fail a vision screening may qualify for our Sight for Students-Kid Matters program. This program provides free eye screenings, eye examination and glasses.
Working in collaboration with the Texas Commission for the Blind and the citizens of the State of Texas, Prevent Blindness Texas has been selected as the screening agency for the Blindness Education, Screening and Treatment (B.E.S.T.) program. B.E.S.T. is funded solely by the generosity of the citizens of the State of Texas. Whenever an individual renews his or her driver's license, he or she may select to donate the sum of $1.00 for blindness prevention programs. As a result of these donations, adult vision-screening programs are being provided to new areas throughout the state. Contact information about the B.E.S.T. program is listed in the "Contact Us" section of this website.
