The 18th Annual Night Sight Golf Tournament was a ‘swinging’ success at Eagle Run Golf Course on Friday, August 25th, 2007. The stars were out and the air was cool--a perfect night for golfing in the dark! A delicious dinner was served before the tournament started along with a wide variety of oral and silent auction items available proving to be a ‘hole-in-one’ with everyone. Golfers had a great time using their senses with the “Blind Putting” contest and the “Closest to the Pin” contest.
For over 16 years, "Operation Eyeglasses" has enabled the homeless to receive free exams and glasses because of the generosity of corporations, volunteers and other groups. The local shelters transport residents to Prevent Blindness Nebraska, and with the help of volunteers, including medical students from Creighton University, they are screened for visual acuity and glaucoma.
Volunteer physicians review results, examine each person and make recommendations. Volunteer opticians from the Nebraska Society of Dispensing Opticians (NSDO) use recycled glasses, which are cleaned and marked with the proper prescription by the Assistance League of Nebraska to fit those who need vision correction.
Rite Style Optical makes glasses at cost for those whose prescriptions are not already available, and Goodfellows pays the cost of these glasses.
Approximately 200 of Omaha’s homeless are assisted each year, and 90-95% of those who attend are in need of glasses or further evaluation. |
