People of Vision

“People of vision, whose clear perspective and farsightedness in community service and devotion to their fellowman have earned them the respect of their community”

The 2007 People of Vision Award Dinner, honoring Dr. Gail Walling Yanney and Michael Yanney was held Thursday, May 10th at the Happy Hollow Club. The event speakers were Mrs. Beverly Maurer, C.R. “Bob” Bell, and Susan Morris. The Corporate Table Chairmen were Chancellor Harold and Beverly Maurer; the Honorary Chairmen were Jerry and Cookie Hoberman. Gail and Mike Yanney are living examples of what Winston Churchill spoke of when he said: “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”

Gail pursued a career in medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, becoming a respected anesthesiologist. She was a Clinical Instructor at University of Nebraska College of Medicine for many years; served as Executive Director of the Clarkson Foundation and finally as Director of the Nebraska Medical Center. She was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, AOA National Medical Honor Society, Nebraska Society of Anesthesiologists and Nebraska Medical Women's Association. She serves on the Advisory Board of the Eppley Cancer Institute, Nebraskans for Research, the Olson Center for Women and the Board of Directors of KANEKO. Among the past Boards that Dr. Walling Yanney has served on are The College of St. Mary, Omaha Community Foundation, Women's Fund of Greater Omaha, Nebraska Arts Council, Nebraska Cultural Endowment, The Nature Conservancy and FirsTier Bank Omaha. Gail has been recognized as a YWCA Woman of Distinction and Arthritis Woman of the Year.

Mike also started his college career at UN-Kearney and followed up at the American Institute of Banking and the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. He is Chairman of the Board of The Burlington Capital Group LLC. He was on the Executive Committee of FirsTier Financial, the Advisory Board for Stanford University of Law, past President of the Omaha Zoological Society Board and Junior Achievement. He was the leader of the Riverfront Development Committee, a Founder of the Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney, and is also very proud to have been chairman of Joslyn Art Museum. Mike is founder of the youth mentoring program, All Our Kids. He has been inducted into the Russian Academy of Science and Information, made a Lifetime Director of the Henry Doorly Zoo and the National PTA.

Gail and Mike have been recognized with the University of Nebraska Medical Center Distinguished Service Award, the Angel Award from Girls Inc., Philanthropist of the Year from the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Humanitarian Award from NCCJ.

Because of their service and commitment to the international, national and local community Prevent Blindness Nebraska is pleased to present the 2007 People of Vision Award to Dr. Gail Walling Yanney and Mr. Michael Yanney.
