CHICAGO (June 28, 2010) – Prevent Blindness America is participating in the National Association of Health Underwriters 2010 Annual Convention and Exhibition, being held this week at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, to promote “Sight Saved.” Sight Saved is a web-based initiative from Prevent Blindness America aimed at educating employers about the importance of providing vision benefits to their employees and empowering employees to educate themselves about vision health and take advantage of their vision benefits to schedule regular, comprehensive exams to protect their vision. The program also advocates to federal and state government on the importance of vision insurance coverage benefits in relation to overall health.

The website, sightsaved.org, contains public health resources, information about vision in the workplace and how vision benefits can assist employees, and access to other Prevent Blindness America materials and programs. All of the program’s materials were developed by volunteer eye care professionals including ophthalmologists, optometrists and research professionals. Sight Saved is sponsored by Transitions Optical, Inc.
Vision benefits offer more than just discounts on glasses and contact lenses. They also provide access to sight-enhancing vision care and vision wear to help employees manage healthcare expenses and maintain their healthy sight for a lifetime.
Vision benefits can help:
- Reduce medical costs.
- Increase employee productivity.
- Maintain eye and overall health.
“Of the $51.4 billion annual economic impact that adult vision problems bring to the United States, an estimated $8 billion is attributed to lost worker productivity. Because many eye diseases can be effectively treated if detected early, we want to help educate employers on the important role they can play in protecting the vision of their employees,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. “By taking advantage of programs like Sight Saved, we can work together to eliminate preventable vision loss.”
