CHICAGO (Mar. 16, 2006) In a major victory, the United States Senate voted 73 to 27 in favor of the Specter-Harkin amendment to the Senate budget resolution to include an additional $7 billion in funding for education and health programs, much of which will go to funding critical medical research and public health programs at NIH and the CDC. This victory would not have been possible without the hard work of grassroots advocates throughout the country.
"We should take time to celebrate our success, but there is a long road ahead and much work yet to be done," said Daniel D. Garrett, Senior Vice President of Prevent Blindness America. "The House still needs to act, and final funding decisions won't be made until the fall."
With the House two weeks behind the Senate, Prevent Blindness America expects efforts to ramp up during recess to achieve similar success in the House.
