Foundation Awards $745,000 to Ohio

Organizations to Fight Hunger and Help Children

Columbus, OH (December 20, 2012)– Prevent Blindness Ohio (PBO) today received a $45,000 contribution to assist with the Star Pupils Program. The grant, which was given to Prevent Blindness Ohio through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program, will work to provide early vision screening to young children so that they can start school “ready to learn” and succeed throughout their school years.

The grant was presented to Prevent Blindness Ohio during a ceremony held today at the Westside Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry. During the ceremony, David Gose, Walmart Regional General Manager for Southern Ohio, discussed Walmart’s ongoing commitment to support programs that help children and families in need. David and Erik Hingst, Senior Manager for Public Affairs and Government Relations, presented the check to Sherry Williams, President & CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio.

“I am so pleased that Prevent Blindness Ohio was chosen as one of the organizations to receive a contribution from the Walmart State Giving Program to strengthen and expand our Star Pupils Program which helps children get their best start in school and in life with healthy vision,” said Sherry Williams, President & CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio.

In addition to the presentation in Columbus, similar events were held in Cleveland, Toledo and Sidney where a total of $745,000 was awarded to organizations that fight hunger, help children and promote community and professional development initiatives. Through the State Giving Program, the Walmart Foundation awards grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities by supporting state and local organizations that create opportunities for people to live better.
