Economic Impact of Vision Problems

GREEN BAY, WI (May 1, 2007) – Last month, Program Director Davinci Wallace joined Prevent Blindness America in raising awareness about the implications of age-related vision issues on the public health of the United States. At the symposium, four major topics were discussed:

1) Economic Impact of Vision Problems-Presentation of the economic burden of major adult visual disorders and future Medicare costs in the United States.

2) Burden of Vision Loss on the Patient, Family, and Society-Discussion from the individuals’ perspective of their experiences with visual impairment, visual loss, lack of independence, and access to eye care.

3) Advances in Treatment and Care Delivery-Description of the advanced treatment in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.

4) Impact of Vision Loss: Perspective from the Professions-Featured the professional point of view from the American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Opthalmology on visual impairment and its economic impact.

Davinci stated, “The symposium was excellent and informative. I gained a greater understanding of the impact vision loss has on society and how we can work together to preserve sight.”
