Foundation Awards Over $1 Billion

To Organizations Nationwide

Columbus, OH (April 30, 2013)–The Walmart Foundation announced over the last fiscal year they gave more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind contributions, making it the first time Walmart or any U.S. retailer has achieved that level of giving. Prevent Blindness Ohio (PBO) was one of their grant recipients receiving $45,000 to assist with the Star Pupils Program. The grant, which was given to Prevent Blindness Ohio through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program, provides early vision screening to young children so that they can start school “ready to learn” and succeed throughout their school years.

“I am so pleased that Prevent Blindness Ohio was chosen as one of the organizations to receive a contribution from the Walmart State Giving Program to strengthen and expand our Star Pupils Program which helps children get their best start in school and in life with healthy vision,” said Sherry Williams, President & CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio.

“Last year our Walmart stores in Ohio and the Walmart Foundation maintained a commitment to making a difference in our communities by supporting organizations that help our families to live better,” said David Gose, Walmart’s Regional General Manager for Southern Ohio and a Prevent Blindness Ohio Board of Directors Member. “In addition to the thousands of community service hours our associates perform and the in-kind donations that are spread throughout the communities we serve, we were able to support dozens of state and local organizations that fight hunger, provide job training opportunities and help educate our children.”

In addition to the presentation in Columbus, similar events were held in Cleveland, Toledo and Sidney where a total of

$745,000 was awarded to organizations that fight hunger, help children and promote community and professional development initiatives.
